Maybe not your typical biker book, but still really enjoyed it. Great tension between Dex and Ris. Loved Ris's relationship with her brother and the members of Pins and Needles.

Under Locke edition by Mariana Zapata Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

900+ pages of actual romance. You get to know both the hero and heroine. You get to watch the progression of them falling into a relationship. Zapata does what I've given up on. She created a world where you can see the characters. She sacrificed nothing. Not grammar, not plot, not romance, not dignity, nothing.

I loved that Dex wasn't sweet and accommodating in the beginning. I love that Iris didn't wear her survival status as an excuse to not live life to the fullest. I love that Dex was jealous, possessive, protective and loyal to Iris.

I love that he cared when she was mad. I love that he chased her, claimed her and wasn't resentful or a punk about it. I love that I paid one flat free for a complete and utter fabulous story. Thank Mariana Zapata. You just gained a tangible for life.
I adored this book! I'm very hesitant to read MC books because the characters are generally not terribly likable. I can love an author, but completely overlook new titles if they feature MCs. I made an exception for this one and I'm so glad I did.

The characters in this novel were what really got to me. First you have Iris, who is stuck working at this place that she hates (at first). She's funny and quirky and so lovable. Then you have Dex, who has way too much responsibility on his shoulders, works too hard, and is secretly sweet and wonderful. Throw them together and you get absolute sparks. They have amazing chemistry and I loved watching their relationship grow and evolve.

Without getting into too much detail, the plot is believable and realistic. This author truly excels at her character building, however, which made the plot fade into the background for me. Just read the book. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
I started a list at the end of 2016 of authors and books that I wanted to read in 2017, and Mariana Zapata was one of them. And man, did she set the bar high for all the new-to-me authors that follow her this year. I totally get why readers call her the Queen of Slow Burn because she ignites the fire within, lets it simmer until you think you can’t take it anymore, and then just a little bit longer before giving you what you ache for.

Iris and Dex. Two characters on complete ends of the spectrum. I loved how much of a fire cracker Iris was. The men in her life completely overlook her temerity, but man is she a strong female. She’s been through hell and back, and even though she feels like she’s been a burden her life she, is nothing of the sort.

Enter Dex.

Dex and I got off to a rocky start because he was mean to the girl I was falling in love with, but when he started to peel back the layers, I found that he had been through some sh*t too, and even though he had a rough, hardened exterior, he had the best heart, and he won Iris over too.

These two. Complete opposite ends of the spectrum but both so perfect for each other.

“He was aloe vera, rough and prickly on the outside, but the inside held all the gooey goodness.”

I felt like this book could go on forever and I would never get enough, and that is the mark of a good author…give good story and the reader will beg for more. What I wouldn’t do for some more Iris and Dex.

Mariana combined the perfect amount of slow burn, with bossy alpha, strong heroine, and comedic quips. I loved, and found myself snickering at some of the things that Iris would think or say.

I also want to point out how amazing the audio is for this book. I started reading and then went to audio while I was working because I didn’t want to set the book down. The narrator was amazing, and made me feel like I was sat down into the story line.

If you have been a Mariana Zapata slacker like I had been, I urge you to dive head first into Under Locke immediately. I promise you won’t regret a single word of it.
First of all, I like Mariana Zapata's books. Actually, I really enjoy them. She is the Queen of slow burn romance and The "Wall of Winnipeg and Me" and "Kulti" are great. This one, however? Meh. I read 80% hoping it would get better and then ditched it.

To be fair, motorcycle clubs are not my thing but I don't think that's the main problem with this book. After all, I read "Wait for It" (which involves the same MC) and enjoyed it. For me, the problem was that I didn't like the main characters. Iris was a passive aggressive whiner and Dex had zero appeal. Zapata normally nails the inner monologue of the heroine narrating her growing relationship with the a-hole hero but I think she had not quite mastered her art when she wrote Under Locke. Iris is, and remains, a drip and Dex is, and remains, a dick. Yes, he might be hot but that's not enough. As an author you have to do way more than repeat boring physical details about an a-hole hero in order to make him really attractive and this just doesn't happen in this book. Perhaps it's because Iris just isn't a strong enough heroine to not come across as being Dex's doormat, which makes me very uncomfortable. Particularly when Dex calls her "babe" all the time. A dominating, older man calling the young and immature girl he is attracted to babe? Shudder.

Also, Zapata's style involves very little plot she writes in detail about life and the slow development of a relationship. That is great when the main and supporting characters are interesting and I enjoy spending time with them but the narrative really drags when the characters are as essentially dull as Iris and Dex. The problem is exacerbated in this book because the small bits of action that do occur just portray Iris as very stupid and Dex as unpleasant. Essentially, I didn't want to be in Iris's head and found Dex to have zero attractiveness. Not a winning recipe for a romance.

So, if you like slow burn romances, I would highly recommend reading other Zapata books but I'd suggest giving this one a miss.
