Greek English Dictionary of the New Testament Bible Students Barclay M Newman 9783438060082 Books Reviews
I was expecting something much larger, but this little book has come in really handy. The paper is very thin, but the print is still clear to read.
It is a good source if you just want/need to know simple translations and don't need the entire lexicon's entry. For some terms it is helpful to know conjugations/declensions since not every verb/noun form is listed (i.e. if you wanted to look up 'bought' in English, you are only provided the form 'buy')
This compact dictionary is not as comprehensive as the Shorter Lexicon of the Greek New Testament, second edition, edited by F. Wilbur Gingrich and Frederick W. Danker. It has not been updated to include all words in both text and apparatus of the United Bible Societies' Greek New Testament (for instance, "derris," a variant in Mark 16 is not listed). The Shorter Lexicon (which is probably out of print) covers more of the variants in the Nestle-Aland 26th edition and the third edition of the Greek New Testament (UBS). On the plus side, the paper is more durable and easier to use than the original Greek English Dictionary of the New Testament. If one already has the original dictionary (which cost $1.50 in 1971), it is not worth buying the revised edition.
It's a NEW TESTAMENT Greek dictionary -- you'll need a general Greek lexicon for anything else. It's a small, very portable dictionary you can take with you with your pocket NT. It's enough to get you by when you're stuck trying to read a passage. It does this very well. Not intended for exegesis -- for that you should start with _A Greek-English Lexicon of the NT & Other Early Christian Literature_, Bauer & Danker.
This is a nice supplement to Kurt Aland's Greek New Testament. People around the time of Jesus spoke Koine Greek, a popular version of the Classical tongue epitomized by Homer. Since it was the "lingua franca" of the Mediterranean (Latin wasn't prominent yet.), the teachings of Jesus and the writings of various Apostles were written down in that language. As a dictionary for use with a Greek New Testament, it is pretty comprehensive and very helpful. But, it would not be helpful in trying to translate, say, Thucydides. It will, however, be quite useful in studying the Christian scriptures in the original tongue.
This is a very small lexicon that is the same size as my Nestle Aland GNT. It is considerably thinner of course, but has always had an answer for any word I've not known. It also has many of forms, outside of the lexical form, that you'll find in the GNT. It is lightweight and is a good companion for general use. It usually offers a few glosses for a term and many different forms with parsings for that term as well. It is not as comprehensive as a reference lexicon, but I don't think that's its function. I suggest this aid.
This is a great little lexicon and the size is exceptional. I can slide it into the pocket of my regular study bible case. Great for use in a pinch compared tot he larger ones that are too cumbersome to travel with.
